Our Highlights:
- Explore the island of St Lucia
- Enjoy the rich and colourful Creole culture
Located in the eastern Caribbean north of St Vincent and the Grenadines and part of the Lesser Antilles and one of the Windward Islands, St Lucia has a long and illustrious colonial history. Known as the 'Helen of the West Indies' because it switched between British and French control so often it was likened to the mythical Helen of Troy, St Lucia was first visited by the Europeans in about 1500 and colonised by the French. Numerous power wrangles then took place, culminating in Independence for the isle in 1979. You will notice a number of old colonial style plantation houses dotted around the island, a reminder of the British and French influence.
From the iconic Pitons in the southwest: twin volcanic spires rising majestically and dramatically from the water in a location between Soufriere and Choiseul on the western side of the isle, to a drive-in volcano; rainforests and waterfalls; reefs teaming with tropical fish; rich birdlife, luxuriant trees, exotic wildflowers, fruit-filled plantations and colonial capital - Castries, St Lucia is a great place to experience a relaxed and informal holiday.
Here the warmth of the Caribbean sun is matched by the welcome of the good natured St Lucians, whose rich and colourful Creole culture is reflected in music, dance and tempting island cuisine
