Latin America meets the Caribbean on the island of Cuba. A fascinating and passionate country full of contrasts. This is a land of paradise beaches, crumbling colonial cities, spectacular scenery, 1950’s cars and sensual Latin music. Our special holiday starts in the vibrant capital Havana, before heading through the rural Cuba to the northwest coast for a short boat ride to the tiny island of Cayo Levisa, with its pretty beaches and relaxed atmosphere.
Havana
A highlight to any visit to Cuba is a stay in Havana. Stay for 3 nights at the Chateau Miramar Hotel (20 mins from Old Havana) and be sure explore old Havana and see the continuing restoration of many of the old colonial buildings, under the care of the City Historian and his staff. There is a good handicrafts market for souvenirs as well as unusual small shops, such as one selling hand-painted lead soldiers, and artist workshops. In the evenings, there is the time-warp cabaret show, the Tropicana or a choice of restaurants, some with music, which may range from Cuban folk, to salsa, flamenco or classical.
Cayo Levisa
The tiny island of Cayo Levisa is enveloped by thick jungles of tropical mangrove and bordered by fabulous white beaches. Spend 4 nights on the island and enjoy swimming and snorkelling simply sway in a hammock in the shade of a palm tree. Opt to spend time browsing around the small shop, having a cool drink in the beachfront bar or perhaps trying some of the fresh seafood served in the restaurant. The island is remote and accessible only by a twice daily boat service, the electricity can occasionally falter, but with comfortable rooms set close to the beach the atmosphere is really quite idyllic.
