Striding astride the two mighty continents of Europe and Asia, Turkey is a treasure trove of archaeological and cultural wonders where traditional East meets aspirational West. Along with spectacular mosques, crusader castles and sublime cuisine, Turkey also boasts a varied beautiful landscape and picturesque Mediterranean coastline.
Turkey has experienced a turbulent history ruled by Greeks, Persians, Romans and Ottomans. It is now a rapidly developing modern country thanks to the ambitious first leader Kemal Ataturk, who took the job of re-establishing Turkish society and creating a secular state in the early 20th Century.
Our fascinating journey begins in the historical city Istanbul formally known as Constantinople. The only city in the world to span two continents, Constantinople was an important strategic and commercial trading route from Europe to the orient and was at the head of the Ottoman Empire. The city was named after the Roman emperor Constantine who built the new capital on the exisiting city of Byzantium. Today Istanbul is a fascinating city to explore. Its a rich cultural melting pot with exotic bazaars, carpet shops, spice merchants, fantastic food, great nightlife, and a skyline dominated with beautiful mosques, churches, temples, palaces and castles.
