8 night holiday discovering Sarawak on the island of Borneo
from £1,095
Day 1:
London to Kuching
Fly London to Kuching arriving the next day.
Day 2 to Day 4:
Kuching
Arrive and transfer to your hotel for three nights in Sarawak's capital. During your stay we have arranged three excursions. Firstly, to visit Semmengok*, a centre noted for its succesful breeding and rehabilitation of orang utans. The second is river trip on the Santubong River to search for the Irrawaddy dolphin, often seen swimming and diving around the small fishing boats. These dolphins are found in rivers, estuary and shallow coastal waters. And also, an introduction to Kuching, which means 'cat' in Malay so we include a visit to the slightly kitsch Cat Museum, a drive around the heritage buildings of the days of the White Rajahs, take a short boat ride for a river borne view of the city, explore the narrow streets of spice merchants and fabric traders and visit the Sarawak Museum.
3 nights: Hilton Kuching - 4
international hotel
Day 5:
Kuching to Batang Ai:
Today, the adventure begins. Leave after breakfast on the 4 hour or so journey to Batang Ai Rainforest Lodge for 4 nights. The last part of the trip is by boat and we always feel there is something rather special about arriving on the water. 3 nights: Hilton Batang Ai - 4
Longhouse Resort
Day 6 to Day 8:
Batang Ai
During your stay here, 2 guided walks are included. The first is in the early morning as the sun rises and birds begin their part melodious, part cacophonous morning chorus; returning in time for breakfast. The second, a nature walk, you may choose to take in the morning or afternoon: from the suspended walkway high in the forest canopy, explore the trees from a different angle. There are many optional visits from here: to a traditional longhouse to see the way of life of the Iban people; jungle trekking; wildlife spotting boat trips.
Day 9:
Batang Ai to Kuching
Return to Kuching for a further night. 1 night: Hilton Kuching - 4
international hotel
Day 10:
Kuching/London
Depart for your flight back to London.
* Please Note:
At Semengok the rehabilitated orang utans roam free in the rainforest. On occasion it may not be possible to see orang utans if they are foraging for food in the jungle away from the centre, this is most likely to occur during the forest's fruiting season (usually December to March). Whilst disappointing this should be considered a good sign, as it means that the oran utans have been successfully rehabilitated and become confident enough to fend for themselves rather than return to the centre to be fed.
