The Forbidden City to Shangri-La

A 12 night journey through traditional China

from £1,435

Our Highlights:
  • Beijing, the Great Wall & the Forbidden City
  • The legendary Tiger Leaping Gorge
  • Lijiang - the best preserved town in China
  • Zhongdian - "Shangri-La"

High on the Tibetan Plateau, surrounded by lakes, mountains and monasteries lies the town of Shangri-La. Formerly known as Zhongdian it has been officially renamed as it is believed to be the setting of James Hilton's mythical paradise.

Our journey to Shangri-La starts in the country's capital, Beijing, where you can experience the pace of change in modern China as the city readies itself for the forthcoming Olympics. You will also be offered an insight into the country's imperial past, visiting some of China's most well-known sites: the Forbidden City, the Temple of Heaven and the Great Wall of China.

We then travel to the province of Yunnan, in China's far south and known as "the land beneath the clouds". Whilst much of China speeds towards the 21st century this area retains an endearing charm offering picturesque towns, wooden shop houses, snow capped peaks, traditional tribes and a relaxed pace of life. This is a truly enchanting area where the names alone inspire mystical images: Jade Dragon Snow Mountain, Tiger Leaping Gorge, Black Dragon Pool and, of course, the mythical Shangri-La.

British passport holders require a visa for China.
