A Taste of Darjeeling

7 night tour including Calcutta and the foothills of the Himalayas around Darjeeling

from £1,195

Day 1: London/Kolkata

Overnight flight from London to Kolkata.

Day 2: Kolkata

Arrive in the city of Kolkata. Established by the East India Company it was the capital of British India until 1911. It remains a cultural capital, and proudly boasts some of the finest British and Bengali architecture in India. Our excursions here include the Victoria Memorial (also known as the British Taj Mahal), the Jain Temple, Dalhousie Square, and the Kali Temple. Spend 1 night at the Peerless Inn Hotel.

Day 3-6: Kalimpong

Following an afternoon flight and road transfer to Kalimpong we arrive at the atmospheric Himalayan Hotel. This was the family home of David MacDonald, a prominent member of the British Raj at the turn of the twentieth century, who upon his retirement in the 1920's turned it into a hotel. It is still run by the MacDonald family to this day. Kalimpong was developed into an alternative hill station to Darjeeling, and quickly gained a reputation as a peaceful haven famed for its beautiful surroundings and abundance of wildflowers. On our first full day in Kalimpong we visit a flower nursery and the contrast of modern and ancient Buddhist monasteries. The following day we travel to Lava, a village on the old trade route with Bhutan, and Loleygaon to enjoy the panorama of the forest-covered Singalila ridge. We also include time to relax in the stunning surroundings, or the more adventurous may chose to join us for a rafting trip down the Teesta River enjoying the thrills of up to Grade IV rapids!

Day 7: Darjeeling

After breakfast transfer by road to Darjeeling. This UNESCO World Heritage Site was a quiet hill village until the British East India Company leased the area, and in 1841 brought in tea from China; in a few short years Darjeeling's fame was secured. Also famous for the Himalayan Mountaineering Institute based there, we visit the Everest Museum to see pictures and equipment from expeditions through the ages, including some belonging to Tenzing Norgay, which were used on the first successful ascent. Another highlight is the collection of tweed jackets and plus fours that equipped the Mallory expeditions of the early 20's.

Day 8: Kolkata

Rise early to see the sunrise on Tiger Hill. Enjoy unrivalled views across Darjeeling and of the captivating Kanchenjunga - third highest mountain in the world, and the tallest in India. Weather permitting, this multi coloured dawn with the Himalayas reflecting the changing hues of the sun is truly a majestic sight. After breakfast at the hotel we transfer down the hill to Bagdogra for the return flight to Kolkata. Overnight at the Peerless Inn Hotel for your final night.

Day 9: Kokata/London

Depart Kolkata for your return flight to London.
