Stunning temples and verdant tea estates, wildlife at Periyar National Park and delightful colonial Cochin- commencing in Chennai on India’s Bay of Bengal, discover an exotic and colourful side of the country’s south.
Chennai and Mahabalipuram
Our journey begins in Chennai, formally known as Madras, and one of the first trading posts of the British East India Trading Company. Enjoy a selection of excursions in Chennai before heading to the beautiful ancient rock carved temples and caves of Mahabalipurum set on the shores of the Bay of Bengal.
Pondicherry and Tanjore
On arrival into seaside town of Pondicherry you are captured by the charming French colonial influence. Enjoy the sights combined with a visit to the famous Sri Aurobindo Ashram. Enroute to Tanjore discover the temples of Gangaikondachola Puram, and the enormous UNESCO-Listed Brihadishwara Temple.
Madurai and Periyar
One of South India’s oldest cities, Maduri is home to the visually stunning temple complex of Sri Meenakshi with brightly coloured gopurams covered ornate deities. Explore Sri Meenakshi and other temples around Maduari. We also visit the protected Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary and expect to see Indian elephants, sambar, mongoose, langur, cormorants and kingfishers.
Cochin
Famous for its Chinese fishing nets and trade exotic spices colonial Cochin offers a relaxing finale to our tour. During our half day city tour we take in the Dutch Palace and Jewish Synagogue as well as a walking tour of Fort Cochin.
