Day 1-2: London/Colombo
Fly from London to Colombo, capital of Sri Lanka (arrival next day). On arrival transfer to our hotel - The Tamarind Tree
Day 3: Colombo/Kandy
Visit the charming Pinnewela elephant orphanage, where it is possible to watch the elephants feeding and bathing. Head onwards to Kandy, a picturesque lakeside town nestled in the foothills of Sri Lanka's highlands. Kandy is the home to the famous UNESCO Temple of the Sacred Tooth. We include a trip to visit the temple and also a chance to witness a cultural show including Kandyan dancing. Stay 3 nights at the Mahaweli Reach.
Day 4: Kandy
After breakfast head out to Peradeniya and the famous Botanical Gardens. Once the pleasure gardens of the Kandyan King, these gardens brim with exotic flora, including hundreds of palms, orchids, rare blossoms and spice trees. We also include a visit to a local arts and crafts centre.
Day 5: Kandy/Dambulla
Drive north to the village of Dambulla and visit the fascinating Dambulla Cave Temple. A sacred pilgrimage site for 22 centuries, this UNESCO-Listed cave monastery is the largest and best preserved cave-temple complex in Sri Lanka. Head back to Kandy and en route stop at Matale to enjoy lunch and a visit to a spice garden. Discover where spices such as coriander, cardamom and vanilla are grown. Also, enjoy a cookery demonstration and preperation of a local curry and rice dish.
Day 6: Kandy/Nuwara Eliya
Embark on a train journey to Nawalapitiya, where on arrival you'll continue by road to Nuwara Eliya. Visit a tea estate and factory where you can partake in tea plucking and tea tasting. In Nuwara Eliya, enjoy a brief orientation of the town, St George's Lake, the racecourse and golf links. Stay for 2 nights at St Andrews, Nuwara Eliya.
Day 7: Nuwara Eliya
Spend a day at leisure to enjoy some shopping and golf, or perhaps take our optional excursion to Horton Plains - located on a windswept saddle, where you can walk or spot birdlife on the misty grasslands. Head onwards to 'World's End', one of the finest views in Sri Lanka, and visit the dramatic Bakers Falls. Return to St Andrews for dinner.
Day 8: Nuwara Eliya/Colombo
En route to Colombo, visit a gem museum at Ratnapura - centre of Sri Lanka's sapphire and gem mining, with lunch at the Ratnoloka Hotel. Overnight at Mount Lavinia.
Day 9: Colombo/London
Transfer to the airport for you onward flight to London.
